How long does SPF 50 last?

Today, the broad spectrum sunscreens have an eminent place in the skincare industry as this product plays an essential role in protecting skin from the harmful effect of the sun.

According to FDA regulations, "It is necessary to label commercial products such as sunscreens with the SPF values that signify how long these SPF numbers will protect from UV radiations."

In deciding the effectiveness of a broad-spectrum sunscreen, SPF (Sun Protection factor) acts as a significant character.

Lets discuss the following points about SPF 50:

1. What is SPF?

2. Why is SPF 50 the best?

3. How long does SPF 50 last?

4. Some Sun Safety Tips

What is SPF?

SPF is a standard of measuring how much UV radiation is needed to cause sunburn on protected skin concerning the number of UV radiations needed to cause sunburn on unprotected skin. In layman's terms, SPF values tell us what percentage of sun radiations your sunscreen can restrict from entering the skin. The number ranges 6–10, 15–25, 30–50, and 50 plus or spf 100.

"FDA recommends using at least SPF 15. Else, if your skin is fair, go for SPF 30 or 50 and maximum up to 60."

Why is SPF 50 the best?

It is said that higher SPF provides higher protection but why SPF 50 is said to be the upper limit to go for?

High SPF sunscreen can over prompt the protection and overexpose the people towards uva rays and increase the risk of skin cancer.

"The SPF 50 not only a safe range but also transmit only two photons through sunscreen film as compared to SPF 10, which transmit 10 photons."

How long does SPF 50 last?

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, "the high-number SPF lasts the same amount of time as low-number SPF." That is why wearing high Spf doesn't mean you can spend time outdoors without reapplication of sunscreen.

According to the FDA, Sunscreens should reapply every two hours and more often after swimming or sweating. Must remember to follow this instruction, as a failure of this can retard the sunscreen's efficacy.

Also, it is recommended to apply 2 mg/cm2 of sunscreen and 15 minutes before you go outside to stay protected from skin damage.

Note: SPF sunscreen protects you only from UVB rays. To get overall protection, go for broad-spectrum sunscreen which also contains the PA factor and antioxidants along with the SPF factor. This not only provides you UVB protection but also UVA and harmful pollutants. To know more about broad-spectrum sunscreens, click here
