What are the good and bad effects of sun exposure?
Every one of you comes in contact with the sunlight every day. So, it is essential to know what are the good and adverse effects of sun exposure.
Positive Effects of Sunrays:
Limited exposure to sun rays is good for us and has several positive effects on our overall health.
Sun rays are required for the synthesis of Vitamin D in the human body. Vitamin D helps strengthen bones, muscles and body’s immune system.
A day full of sunlight helps to improve your mood, have more energy and makes you feel better as it helps to release feel-good hormones like serotonin.
But as we know, everything has its cons.
Adverse Effects of Sunrays:
If you have prolonged Sun exposure, it may cause harmful effects on your skin viz,
Dried or rough skin
This is because the Sun emits harmful UVA, UVB and IR radiations year round. UVA rays (the ageing rays) penetrate deeply into the skin layers and damages collagen and elastin tissue causing wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, scaly patches, and skin cancer in the long term. While UVB rays (the burning rays) affect the outer layer of the skin causing sunburns and tanning.
So, try finding a balance between good Sun exposure and dangerous over-exposure. To manage them & enjoy the Sun’s benefits, it is crucial to protect yourself from harmful sun rays. You need protection!!
Follow these and prevent the damage caused to your skin by sun exposure:
Use Sunscreen: Apply generously a broad spectrum gel based sunscreen with SPF 50, 20 minutes before going out in the sun. A
Broad spectrum sunscreen
gives protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Reapply it after two hours in the sun and after swimming for maximum protection.
Cover your skin with cotton fabrics clothes and protective sun accessories like sunglasses and a hat.
Avoid Peak hours:
Avoid the direct sun between 10 am. and 4 pm as the sun rays are most intense at that time and can damage your skin.
Stay protected and enjoy the sunshine!
