2. Hormonal variation during pregnancy or menopause makes people susceptible to hyperpigmentation. Pregnancy can trigger overproduction of melanin that is the reason behind the appearance of ‘mask of pregnancy’ on the face. Women taking birth control pills are also prone to hyperpigmentation.

3. Skin damage due to injury, skin scars, acne marks and skin blemishes all may cause hyperpigmentation.

4. Improper removal of hairs during waxing and hypersensitivity (allergic reaction) also promote darkening of the skin.

5. Genes are responsible for pigmentation; people who have a family history of hyperpigmentation are more prone to skin pigmentation.

    Factors Potentiating Skin Pigmentation Spots

    Excessive exposure to the sun’s radiation stimulates the melanin secretion from melanocytes (skin cells responsible for the melanin secretion) which darkens the exposed surface of the skin and is the primary risk factor. 

    For example, age spots, freckles or other dark skin patches are more pronounced when exposed to the sun.

    Home remedies for skin pigmentation: Your skin pigmentation treatment!

    A large number of dermatological medications are available for the treatment of hyperpigmentation, but homemade remedies are still widely applicable due to their effectiveness and minimal or no side effects. 

    Here are some of the best home remedies for skin pigmentation:

    1. Raw potato: 

      Raw potato is a potent inhibitor of melanocytes; it contains an enzyme named catecholase which slows down and limits the production of melanin pigments. Thus reduces dark spots and promotes skin lightening.

      What to do?

      Slice the potato and rub it on the affected areas for 3-5 minutes. Leave it for 10 minutes and then wash it off using lukewarm water.

      2. Vitamin E: 

        Vitamin E neutralises the effect of UV radiation and helps in repairing damaged skin, thus helps to cure hyperpigmentation. You can easily purchase Vitamin E from any pharmacy. 

        What to do?

        Puncture 2-3 Vitamin E capsules and mix it with 2-3 drops of castor oil. Apply on the pigmented areas, leave overnight and wash in the morning. Repeat 2 – 3 times a week.

        3. Almonds and milk: 

          Almonds are the rich source of fatty acids and provide nourishment to skin by making it plump and healthy. Milk rich in lactic acid has lightening and brightening properties which lighten skin discolouration.

          What to do?

          Make a paste of soaked almonds in raw milk. Apply directly to your skin. Rinse with warm water after 10-15 minutes. For better results, use daily for 3-4 weeks. 

          4. Papaya:


            Papaya contains an enzyme called papain a potent exfoliator which facilitates lightening of dark patches by exfoliating away the dead skin cells.

            What to do?

            Grate papaya and use it directly on the skin. Leave on for 20 minutes. Repeat for a month or,

            Mash raw papaya and rose water to form a thick paste. Apply on your skin for 30 minutes as a face pack. Wash it off using cold water.

            5. Red onions: 

              A 2011 study concluded that isolates from red onion jammed the cell actions that reduce excess pigmentation. 

              Red onion contains Vitamin C potent antioxidants that inhibit the oxidation of melanocytes and leads to the reduction of hyperpigmentation, giving you a glowing skin. 

              What to do?

              Apply the onion slices or extract the onion juice, apply on the affected areas. Wash with lukewarm water after 10 minutes.

              6. Apple cider vinegar (ACV): 

                Due to its astringent properties, ACV helps to reinstate the natural colour of the skin and helps make the skin radiant.

                Instead of spending heaps on chemical peels in parlours, use ACV which even acts as a mild chemical peel, due to the presence of acetic acid.

                What to do?

                Apply equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water to the pigmented area for a few minutes, twice daily. In case of irritation, stop using the vinegar. 

                7. Lemon juice and honey:

                  Vitamin C is abundant in lemons, owing to their natural bleaching and antioxidant properties to lighten dark spots. The citric acid in lemon juice helps to tone the skin.

                  What to do?

                  Pair up lemon and honey for the ultimate skin lightening mask. Apply this mixture on the skin for at least 15 minutes. Dilute the lemon juice with water, in case you have sensitive skin.

                  8. Tomato:

                    Due to the presence of lycopene in tomato, the skin is protected against short-term and long-term aspects of photodamage. It is well-known for skin lightening and removing tanning, reduce spots and pigmentation by neutralising the effect of harmful UV rays.
