Many people believe that using a tanning bed to get a tan is safer than tanning outside in the sun. But the truth is that tanning beds can cause as much damage as the sun.
Both the methods of tanning are not safe as both permanently increase your cancer risk and can damage your DNA.
Even tanning bed is more harmful as it produces much more amount of UVA rays than the sun which penetrates deep in the skin and can cause premature skin aging, skin defects, and skin cancer. People with a lighter skin tone are more likely to use indoor tanning to get a base tan before going on vacation to protect themselves from sun damage and sunburn but it does little to protect them.
Tanning beds are a very big risk -Tanning beds cause faster mutations in the body and lead to skin cancer. They also contribute to skin burns, wrinkles, rashes, dark spots, age spots, and eye cancers. They may suppress your immune system, leaving you to more vulnerable to diseases.
How to protect yourself?
Avoid tanning beds and sunlamps: Both can cause serious long-term skin damage and contribute to skin cancer.
Cover up: When you are out in the sun, Cover your skin properly with clothing. Wear a hat, sunglasses to protect yourself from sun rays.
Limit your direct exposure to the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest.
